Ballast

Ballast Deck Bridge

A railroad bridge with ballast and track structure carried across the bridge deck. This design can help maintain a more consistent track profile through bridge and crossing areas.

Ballast Shoulder

The section of ballast that extends beyond the ends of the ties. The shoulder helps hold the track in place and supports lateral stability.

Ballast Regulator

Bridge Abutment

Derail

Diamond

A track crossing where two railroad tracks cross each other at grade. The shape of the crossing often resembles a diamond.

Drainage

The system that moves water away from the track structure. Good drainage protects ballast, roadbed, embankments, bridges, culverts, and the overall track structure.

Ditch

A drainage channel along the railroad right-of-way. Ditches help move water away from the track and roadbed.


E

Easement

A legal right to use or access land for a specific purpose, such as railroad operations, construction, maintenance, utilities, or drainage.

Embankment

A raised section of earth or fill material that supports the track above the surrounding ground.

Emergency Repair

Railroad repair work performed quickly after a failure, derailment, washout, storm damage, bridge issue, or other service-impacting event.

End Mismatch

A condition where the ends of two rails at a joint do not line up properly in height or position. FRA Track Safety Standards include provisions related to rail end mismatch.


F

Fastener

A device used to secure the rail to the tie or track structure. Fasteners may include spikes, clips, screws, anchors, plates, and other rail-securing components.

Field Weld

A rail weld made in the field, usually to join rail sections during construction, repair, or continuous welded rail work.

Flangeway

The open space beside the rail that allows a wheel flange to pass through a crossing, turnout, frog, or guard rail area. Flangeways must remain clear for safe wheel movement.

Frog

A track component used in turnouts and crossings where wheel paths intersect. The frog allows wheels to pass through the crossing point of two rails.


G

Gage

The distance between the inside faces of the two running rails. Standard gage in North America is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. Maintaining proper gage is one of the core responsibilities of track construction and Maintenance of Way crews.

Gage Rod

A rod used to help maintain track gage by connecting the rails. Gage rods are sometimes used in special or temporary conditions.

Grade

The slope of the track or roadway. Grade can refer to the vertical rise or fall of the track over a distance.

Grade Crossing

A place where a roadway and railroad track cross at the same level. Grade crossings may include signs, pavement markings, gates, lights, bells, crossing panels, and drainage features.

Guard Rail

A rail installed alongside a running rail to help guide wheels through bridges, crossings, turnouts, or other special track areas.


H

Hi-Rail Vehicle

A truck or vehicle equipped to operate both on roads and on railroad track. Hi-rail vehicles are commonly used for inspection, maintenance, repair, and field support.

Headwall

A structural wall at the end of a culvert or drainage pipe. Headwalls help retain soil and protect the culvert opening.

Highway-Rail Grade Crossing

A public or private location where a highway, road, or street crosses railroad track at the same level. FRA has a dedicated safety program for grade crossing safety and trespass prevention.


I

Industrial Siding

A track serving an industrial facility, warehouse, manufacturing plant, transload site, mine, terminal, or customer location.

Inspection

The process of checking railroad track, bridges, crossings, drainage, and related infrastructure for defects, wear, damage, or unsafe conditions. FRA Part 213 includes track inspection requirements.

Insulated Joint

A rail joint designed to electrically separate sections of rail, often used in signal systems and track circuits.


J

Jack and Bore

A trenchless construction method used to install casing pipe under railroads, roads, or other obstacles. A jacking system pushes the casing while boring or cutting removes material from the path.

Joint

The connection point where two pieces of rail meet. Joints may use joint bars, bolts, compromise bars, or other components.

Joint Bar

A metal bar used to connect two rail ends at a joint.


L

Line

The horizontal direction or alignment of track. Crews may refer to correcting “line” when adjusting track alignment.

Low Spot

A depressed area in the track surface or roadbed that may hold water or create rough track conditions.


M

Maintenance of Way, MOW

The inspection, repair, maintenance, and construction work needed to keep railroad track, bridges, crossings, drainage, and right-of-way infrastructure safe and reliable.

Mainline

A primary track used for through train movements. Mainline work often involves strict coordination, planning, and safety protection.

Material Staging

Organizing and placing materials near the work area before construction or repair begins. Good staging helps crews work efficiently and safely.

Mud Spot

An area where fine material, water, and ballast mix together, creating poor support under the track. Mud spots often signal drainage or subgrade problems.


O

On-Track Safety

Safety procedures used to protect workers from trains, on-track equipment, and other movements while working on or near track. FRA Roadway Worker Protection rules require railroads to adopt and implement on-track safety programs.

Open Deck Bridge

A bridge where the ties are directly supported by bridge members, with open space between ties instead of a full ballast deck.

Out-of-Face Work

A production-style maintenance or construction method where crews work continuously through a section of track rather than making isolated spot repairs.


P

Panel Track

A preassembled section of track made up of rails, ties, fasteners, and other components. Panel track can be installed quickly during construction or repair.

Plate

Plug Rail

A short piece of rail installed to replace a damaged or removed rail section.

Private Crossing

A crossing that serves a private road, farm access, industrial facility, or private property rather than a public roadway.

Production Gang

A larger crew assigned to perform high-volume track work, such as tie replacement, surfacing, rail replacement, or other large maintenance projects.


R

Rail

The steel running surface that supports and guides train wheels. Rail comes in different sizes and profiles depending on use, age, and railroad standards.

Rail Anchor

Rail Relay

The process of replacing existing rail with new or reusable rail.

Rail Seat

The area where the rail sits on the tie plate, tie, or fastening system.

Railbound Manganese Frog

A heavy-duty frog commonly used in turnouts. Manganese steel is used because it can withstand high impact and wear.

Roadbed

The prepared foundation that supports the ballast and track structure. A stable roadbed is essential for safe, durable track.

Roadway Worker

A worker whose duties involve inspection, construction, maintenance, or repair of railroad track, bridges, roadway, signal and communication systems, electric traction systems, roadway facilities, or roadway maintenance machinery on or near track. FRA’s Roadway Worker Protection program focuses on protecting these workers from trains and equipment.

Right-of-Way

The railroad corridor that includes the track area and surrounding property used for railroad operations, access, drainage, utilities, signals, and maintenance.


S

Shoulder

Siding

A track connected to the main track or another track, often used for storage, loading, unloading, passing, or customer service.

Signal

A device or system used to communicate train movement authority, track conditions, crossing warnings, or other operational information.

Spike

A fastener traditionally used to secure rail or tie plates to wood ties.

Spot Repair

A localized repair made to a specific defect or problem area instead of working through a long section of track.

Stringer

A bridge member that runs in the direction of the track and supports bridge ties or deck components.

Subballast

A layer of material between the ballast and subgrade. Subballast helps distribute loads, improve drainage, and separate ballast from the underlying soil.

Subgrade

The natural or prepared ground beneath the track structure. The subgrade supports the roadbed, subballast, ballast, ties, and rail.

Surfacing

The process of raising, leveling, and aligning track to restore proper geometry and ride quality. Surfacing often involves tamping ballast under the ties.

Switch

A track assembly that allows trains or rail equipment to move from one track to another.

Switch Point

The movable rail section in a switch that directs wheels toward one route or another.


T

Tamp

To compact ballast under and around ties so the track is properly supported.

Tamper

A machine that lifts track and packs ballast under the ties. Tamping helps restore track surface and alignment.

Tie

Another term for crosstie.

Tie Plate

A steel plate placed between the rail and a wood tie. Tie plates help distribute load and hold the rail in position.

Tie Replacement

The process of removing old or damaged ties and installing new ties to restore track support and gage-holding ability.

Walkway

Wing Rail

Common Railroad Crossing Terms

Active Warning Devices

Signals, flashing lights, bells, and gates used to warn road users at a grade crossing.

Crossing Gate

A gate arm that lowers to block traffic when a train is approaching or occupying the crossing.

Crossing Surface

The driving surface installed between and around the rails at a roadway crossing. Common materials include concrete, rubber, timber, asphalt, or composite systems.

Flasher

The flashing light assembly at a grade crossing.

Grade Crossing Signal

A warning system used at a roadway crossing to alert drivers and pedestrians of train movement.

Passive Crossing

A crossing with signs or pavement markings but without active warning devices such as gates or flashing lights.

Public Crossing

A crossing where a public road crosses railroad track.

Road Approach

Common Railroad Structure Terms

Backwall

A wall at the end of a bridge or abutment that helps retain material behind the bridge seat.

Bent

A bridge support made up of piles, posts, caps, and bracing.

Bracing

Structural members used to stabilize a bridge, trestle, or other structure.

Cap

A horizontal member that sits on top of piles or posts and supports the bridge structure above.

Girder

Pile

Span

Trestle

Common Crew and Safety Terms

Competent Person

A person with the training, experience, and authority to identify hazards and take corrective action. The exact meaning can vary by rule, company, and work type.

Foreman

The crew leader responsible for directing field work, communicating the work plan, coordinating tasks, and helping maintain safety and production.

Job Briefing

A safety and work-planning discussion before work begins or when conditions change. Job briefings help crews understand the work, hazards, protection, roles, and communication expectations.

Maintenance Crew

A crew assigned to inspect, repair, maintain, or improve existing railroad infrastructure.

PPE

Personal protective equipment. In railroad construction, PPE may include hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, gloves, hearing protection, protective footwear, fall protection, or other required gear.

Roadway Worker Protection, RWP

A set of safety requirements and procedures designed to protect workers on or near railroad track from trains and on-track equipment. FRA states that RWP regulations require railroads to adopt and implement on-track safety programs.

Track Authority

Permission or authorization that controls use of a section of track. Work crews may need track authority or other protection before occupying certain track areas.

Watchman or Lookout

A trained person assigned under specific procedures to watch for approaching trains or equipment and warn workers when required.
